The Library Company of Philadelphia opened by Ben Franklin. Being an avid library user, I had access to many books from a young age.

The National Teachers Association was founded (now the NEA). Advocacy for teachers thus began!

The Department of Education was created to establish effective school systems.

In order to improve high school graduation rates, junior high schools were created. Indianola Junior High School was opened.

Jean Piaget's The Child's Conception of the World is published. Piaget influenced a lot of my undergrad studies, as I'm sure he did for my teachers as well.

The Smart Board was introduced! This greatly influenced my learning and my teaching by making lessons more engaging.

This is the year I was born and from an early age I was read to. I was and still am to this day a huge Winnie the Pooh fan! I also remember from a young age having my grammar corrected by my grandma.

I began kindergarten in 1998 and that's when I fell in love with school. My kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Antonetti and I credit her a lot with my career choice. Even from a young age she made an impact on me and kept contact throughout my schooling!

I remember being taught by Mr. Holt how to write to a prompt. I was good at it, because I followed directions. However, to this day, I struggle with creative writing.

This was the first year of PSSA testing and I was in third grade. I remember it not being as stressed when we started compared to graduating high school. I always did well on them, but I still get nervous when taking a high stakes test!

I always hated when we had to use our phonics books. Reading came very natural to me, so I always felt like I was taking steps backwards when I had to do this and I struggled!

In middle school I was placed in Advanced English. I thought this was a big deal, but I was really disappointed with my middle school english experience. I remember having to memorize poems and hating it.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative was launched.

My junior year, i did an author study on Mitch Albom. This was the first time I remember doing a choice project and I found my favorite author and style of books that I loved through it!

I mentored an elementary student that struggled with reading. This helped me decide that I wanted to go into education. When I declared my major, my advisor advised me to not go into education due to a lack of jobs. This motivated me to work really hard to set myself apart so that I could make it in education.

I transferred to Penn State Harrisburg and began my education courses. I learned a new appreciate for phonics building skills and an understanding on how children read.

I had a student in third grade move in that couldn't read kindergarten sight words, that's what helped me decide on literacy education for my masters degree.
