  • Trust vs Mistrust

Erikson's Trust vs Mistrust: Birth to 18 months One thing I remember vividly about my childhood was the attention I received from my parents. Whenever something bad happened, I would either cry and be comforted my my parents, or run to them to feel safe. Therefore, this is the time I learned that I could trust my caregivers.
  • Primary Circular Reactions

    Primary Circular Reactions
Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage: 1-4 Months At 2 months, I began to smile at the voice of family members. Later, I began to grasp and suck on an empty plastic bottle that I would eventually take everywhere! I began to interpret information in the environment around me.
  • Secondary Circular Reaction

Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage: 4-8 Months At 4 months, I began babbling. I also started to sit up and pick up my toys and put them in my mouth at around 6 months, especially my Fisher-Price Peek-a-blocks shape sorter. In addition, I could recognize when somebody was calling my name. The actions became repetative showing a more complex understanding of the environment.
  • First Hair Cut

Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage In May 1997, I got my fist haircut. I remember the salon had various kiddy seats, such as airplaines, cars, etc. I sat in the airplane. Having my parents there to comfort me, and getting a lolipop at the end of the haircut, made the experience all the more pleasurable.
  • Coordination of Reactions

Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage: 8-12 Months I began to crawl at the age of 8 months. I said my first word at 9 months, Mama, and began to walk at the age of 11 months. This is the time when I started to explore my surroundings and was introduced to cause and effect.
  • Tertiary Circular Reactions

Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage: 12-18 Months In this phase, I started drinking from my blue sippy cup, get food with my fingers (and sometimes utensils), developed my vocabulary, draw, dance, etc. Perhaps my fondest memory of this time was when I would push my older sister in a stroller that was meant for me! I would often imitate her actions, too! So much so, that I was potty trained (age 12 months) well before other children my age.
  • Early Representational Thought

Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage: 18-24 Months Important events during this period include reading, learning songs and rhymes, and run around in the playground. I began to say identify myself as "me" and learn words like "please" and "thank you". I was also very social to visitors and strangers and loved to show off my talking skills.
  • Preoperational Stage

Piaget's Preoperational Stage: 2+ years I was a great conversationist! The Portuguese saying, "falar pelos cotovelos", which essentially means speaking non-stop, represents what I was like in my childhood. I would also throw the best tea parties at my house, with guests including my sister, mom, and my favorite stuffed animals. This is where I would get all dressed up in my princess costume and tiara. I loved to play explorer in my back yard, using a wraping paper tube as a sword.
  • Moved to Washington D.C.

    Moved to Washington D.C.

Moved back, again, to Brasilia, Brazil
Erikson's Identity vs Role Confusion This was perhaps the harderst move for me emotionally. Being in the middle of my High School years, very socially adapted, and doing very well academically, moving back was something I didn't want to do. When arriving back to Brasilia, it became an introvert. I never wanted to leave the house or go out with old friends. Slowly, I began to open myself up and am currently doing much better. However, I am not fond of the city itself and can't wait to move again
