    King Philip II's Rule in Spain

    Queen Elizabeth I Starts her Rule

    In 1558, Elizabeth Tudor, also known as Elizabeth I and the Virgin Queen, took over the rule after her half sister "Bloody Mary".
  • Philip II sends an Armada

    In 1588, King Philip II sends a fleet of warships, also known as an armada, to attack England. Resulting in him losing because his ships were not as big and well manned as England's.
  • Henry IV and the Edict of Nantes

    In 1589, Henry of Navarre, or King Henry IV, realized that he would never be accepted as a Protestant towards France, so he converted to the Catholic faith that led to the end of 30 years of fighting. He issued the Edict of Nantes which made Catholic the official language of France but allowed Huguenots to worship and have the same political rights.

    30 Years War

    The 30 years war happened because the Peace of Augsburg didn't settle religious disputes in 1555. It started in 1618 in the Holy Roman Empire and was originally fought between the Catholics from the Holy Roman Empire and the Protestant nobles from Bohemia. The main conflict was the political struggle for power between France and Spain. Soon everyone but England was involved but then the Peace of Westphalia was passed in 1648 ending the war and splitting it into 300 independent states.
  • King Charles I signs Parliaments petition

    In 1628, King Charles I signs a petition that Parliament passed that said only Parliament could okay tax increases. Eventually he realized it was limiting his divine power and then pushed more rituals on the Church of England causing many Puritans to go to America.
  • Hobbes writes the Leviathan

    Hobbes wrote the Leviathan in 1651 because he believed before society life was solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.
  • Locke wrote Two Treatise of Government

    In 1679, Locke wrote Two Treatise of Government which argued against the absolute power of rulers. He believed before society was equal and free and that we all had the Natural Rights of life, liberty, and property.
  • Glorious Revolution

    In early 1688, William secretly prepared to invade England, but by late 1688 James learned of the plot. In November William land in England and James meets him with his army. Many of James' troops flee and his other daughter Anne and her husband defect and James runs off to France with his wife. It is know as the Glorious Revolution because there was almost no bloodshed.
  • Toleration Act

    The Toleration Act of 1689 is passed that granted public right for public worship.
