    The Egyptian president, Anwar Sadat, and Israeli Prime Minister, Menachem Begin reached a peace agreement at Camp David, U.S. Egypt recognized Israel as a nation and Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. This treaty ended a 30 year conflict.

    Yasser Arafat died and Mahmoud Abbas became the new leader of the PLO and Israel withdrew from Gaza and parts of the West Bank.
