Israel was established in 1948, most of Middle Eastern countries have refused to recognize its right to exist. A series of wars between Israel and its neighbors had led to the expansion of Israel which controls more land now than it did in 1948. -

The Arab Israeli conflict began in 1948 has been going on through the years. In 1967 and 1973 war had erupted again. -

Egyptian troops moved into Sinai and Egypt began to close off the Gulf of Aqaba, Israels route to the Red Sea. Israel launched air strikes against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, destroying most of their airplanes on the ground. Israeli ground troops then moved in and rapidly defeated Arab forces. -
A Peace Agreement
Egypt wanted peace with Israel. To help facilitate this historic peace, U.S president Jimmy Carter invited Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. -
Palestinian Unrest
As Egypt and Israel made peace, Palestinian Arabs continued their struggle for nationhood. Under the UN partition plan of 1947, there were supposed to be two states a Jewish state and Arab state. Palestinian Liberation Organization formed with a pledge to destroy Israel and replace it with a Palestinian state.
