    After World War 1, the league of nations gave Britain control over mandate for Palestine and made sure that Britain make preparations for a homeland. Jewish leaders in Palestine presses Britain to make a Jewish state. the horrors of the holocaust made the world sympathetic towards the Zionist cause. Britain gave up control of the mandate and handed it over to UN,The UN proposed to partition Palestine into a Jewish state and Arab state making Jerusalem an international state.the Arabs objected

    As British left Palestine. David Ben-Gurion and other Jewish leaders declared Israel as a free democratic country. Ben Gurion became Israel's first prime minister also.

    A day after Israel's independence, armies from Arab countries: Egypt,Syria,Lebanon,Transjordan, and Iraq invaded Israel. the war lasted from may to December. Arab armies were defeated but Arab states negotiated cease-fire agreements with Israel but no one wanted to sign a peace treaty. The war caused a huge refugee problem, over 700,000 Palestinian Arabs became refugees. They fled or were removed from areas In Israel that took control over from the war and chaos.

    The six day war began at June 5th to June 10th 1967. Israel took control of the Golan heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem. In the war Israel launched air strikes against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, destroying most of the airplanes on ground. Israeli troops then moved in and defeated Arab troops.

    Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty in camp David, Maryland which is the presidential retreat. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat declared that Egypt wanted to make peace with Israel. after being invited by U.S. president Jimmy Carter at camp David to sign the Camp David Accords to facilitate the Historic Peace. Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula back to Egypt.
