  • Six Day War

    Six Day War
    When Egypt began to close off the Gulf of Aqaba, Israel's route to the Red Sea, Israel launched air strikes against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. Israeli ground troops then moved in and took control of the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
  • Yon Kippur War

    Yon Kippur War
    The Yon Kippur War was the attempt of Egypt and Syria to win their territory back from Israel, which it had taken in the Six Day War. Israel was taken off guard, and fighting lasted for weeks before both sides agreed to a cease-fire.
  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
    When Anwar Sadat declared that Egypt wanted peace with Israel, US president Jimmy Carter invited Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin to Camp David in Maryland to negotiate terms. An agreement called the Camp David Accords was reached where Egypt recognized Israel, and Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt.
  • Intifada

    Intifada
    Tensions began to rise in the West Bank and Gaza, where Israel had begun building settlements. When Palestinian resentment of Israeli occupation boiled over, a rebellion called the intifada began. The intifada led to widespread street violence, and fighting continued until the early 1990s.
  • Second Intifada

    Second Intifada
    As relationships between Israeli and Palestinian leadership began to decline, a second intifada started. This time Palestinian youths were joined by Palestinian security forces with guns. Suicide bombers were sent to Israel to attack civilians. Fighting continues today.
