Claire's literacy timeline (homeschooling adventures with family and friends)

  • Reading books

    Reading books
When I was little I would play with the books that my parents read to me. I would pick them up and go through them like I was reading them. Even though I could not read yet, I still enjoyed listening to my parents read to me.
  • Observing sea life

    Observing sea life
When I was younger my family and I would go to Alabama every year for a family vacation. I loved sitting and watching my brother and cousins dig in the sand and find all of the creatures that lived beneath the surface. I also loved observing all the sea life we could see from the shore.
  • Ballet performances

    Ballet performances
When I was in ballet I had to make sure to observe the other dancers so I would be in sync with them. I needed to watch the moves to learn them and to make sure I perfected them.
  • Kindergarten graduation

    Kindergarten graduation
Graduating was significant because it meant I could read and write. I can remember the books I used to read every day for school to help me learn how to read and the workbooks that helped me learn how to write.
  • Home school field trip

    Home school field trip
When I was home schooled we would take field trips to interesting places with our home school group. We went to Calumet where we read the headstones of the horses and the names on the stalls to learn more about the farm and the animals living there.
  • Listening to my great uncle

    Listening to my great uncle
My great uncle owns a farm not far away from my house and on his land is an Indian mound. He finds arrow heads a lot on his property. One time my brother, cousins, and I went to the Indian mound and he talked to us about the history and helped us find the arrow heads we are holding in the picture.
  • Playing and writing music

    Playing and writing music
My brother and I love listening to guitar music and love playing guitar together. Once I learned how to play, I began writing my own music every now and then. Even though it wasn't any good, I still enjoyed taking the time to listen to and write the music.
  • Observing signs of Spring

    Observing signs of Spring
My mom and I have always been Spring and Summer people. We don't like the cold and it makes us sad to see all the green turn to brown and red. Mom and I have always found great joy in seeing the signs of Spring and seeing the trees and flowers bloom.
  • Talking with my brother

    Talking with my brother
I have always been best friends with my brother. We like to tell each other jokes and make each other laugh. We talk to each other all the time and try to make each other smile as much as possible. Here in the picture you can see us reading instructions and talking while we put together a tent.
  • Writing for my club

    Writing for my club
I took piano lessons for awhile and my teacher created a club for her students. We went to a lady's house to ride horses and we had to do some writing for the discussion at her house.
