Causes For The War of 1812

  • British Blockade

    Britain blockades Europe and seizes hundreds of American ships.
  • Impressment

    The British force American soldiers to serve in the British Navy.
  • War Hawks

    Americans became angry and demanded war against Britain. These people were known as "war hawks" and they were led by John Calhoun and Henry Clay.
  • Chesapeake Incident

    The British want to check American ships for British deserters. When the American captain refuses, the British open fire, killing 3 Americans and wounding 18.
  • Embargp Act of 1807

    President Jefferson asked Congress to declare an embargo which banned exporting goods to other countries. He did this in hope that it would hurt Britain.
  • Battle With The Natives

    Tecumseh, a Native American leader, organized a confederacy to fight for the Northwest Territory lands that were signed away to General William Henry Harrison. This leads to a battle between the Natives and the Americans. Later, the Americans find out the Natives got their weapons from the British, which makes the two nations grow closer to war.
