    200 CE

    Claudius Galenus (Galen) proves that arteries contain blood and suggests that blood forms in the liver and travels through veins around the body.
  • Feb 26, 1200

    mid 1200s

    Eminet Caro and Ibn Al-Nafis discovered that blood flows to and from the lungs.
  • 1628

    William Harvey explains that blood circulates within the body and is pumped by the heart.
  • 1658

    Jan Swammerdam was the first to observe and describe red blood cells.
  • 1665

    Richard Lower performed the first animal blood transfusion.
  • 1674

    Anton Van Leeuwenhoek approximated red blood cells size to 25,000 times smaller than a grain of sand.
  • 1795

    A foot note is recorded stating that Philip Syng Physick performed the first human-to-human blood transfusion.
  • 1902

    Alfred Von Decastello and Adriano Sturli identified the fourth blood type- AB
  • 1907

    Dr Reuben Ottenberg performed the first cross matching transfusion.
  • 1914

    Albert Hustin and Luis Agote discovered that adding sodium citrate to the blood will stop it from clotting.
  • 1916

    Francis Peyton Rous and J.R. Turner develop a solution that allows blood to be stored for a couple weeks for transfusions after it is collected.
  • 1930

    Dr Serge is the first to test the efficency of using humans to transfuse cadaver blood.
  • 1959

    Dr Max Perutz unraveled the structure of hemoglobin (protein in red blood cells that carry oxygen.)
  • 1971

    Dr Baruch identified a substance on the surface of hepatitis B that creates antibodies.
  • 1981

    Originally called GRID )Gay Related Immunodeficiency Disease), AIDS' first cases were repored.
  • 1982

    Dr bruce Evatt suspected that the disease was in the blood.
  • 1984

    Dr Robert Gallo announced that he identified the virus that causes AIDS.
  • ELISA test

    The first test to detect HIV was licensed by the government.
  • 1987-2002

    More sensitive tests were developed to detect infected blood.
