I learned my first words in Spanish.
I did not have and exposure to English -
At Kindergarten , I learned the letters and how to read some words in Spanish.
I acquired my first vocabulary in English. -
I learned how to read and write in Spanish.
I started to recognize letters and written words in English but I did not understand when my teacher was speaking in English. -
I struggled in Spanish because I did not understand long stories; I overcome this by re-reading the stories and taking notes.
In English I struggled with grammar and spelling, but I overcome this by using and re- reading my assignments. -
I had a bad experience with my twelve grade Spanish teacher, and she did not teach the class how to write essays. Later when I entered College, I had difficulties with my English and Spanish writing.

I overcome my Spanish writing problems by practicing writing at home, by doing my assignments, and by asking for help to my friends. In English I still had difficulties, because I lack of vocabulary but by improving my Spanish I also improved my English writing.

I graduated from college in May -2006. I improved by far my Spanish writing. I can say that I became proficient by using the dictionary and I made fewer spelling errors when writing letters in the school.

On the other hand, I had to improve my English because I went to live to Miami and I was forced to learn the language. I practice with colleges and by using the internet as a good recourse. Still my writing was not the best when writing letters or essays.

I stared my Masters online, but this was a very challenging experience. I did overcome this by practicing my writing and re-read my papers more than 5 or six times. After the third class I became more confident in English. It was sad that I had to stop on the third class because I did not have more money to pay for the classes.

I started teaching English in P.R. but at the same time earning my English Certification. With this classes, I can say that I became proficient in English that it is my second language, but I recognize that my dominant language is Spanish.

I feel bilingual because I am able to communicate in two languages at a proficient level, that is why I started an English Certification . I always wanted to be a lifelong learner but I do feel overwhelmed with all the work I have to do from my two classes and many times I do not know how to do it. I hope I overcome this by taking yoga and asking my colleges for help.
