    Israel declared independance. Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq attacked Israel. Israel gained land . Egypt gained the Gaza strip, Jordan gained the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Civilans on both sides became refugees.

    Israel took land from Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Israel agreed to return the land if they could all make peace and If Israel would be reconized as a country. September came and Israel was attacked. Jordan took its land back. This month is know as Black September. It ended in 1970
  • Six Day War

    Egypt blcokaded Israel and Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq moved troops to Israel's borders and made threatening statements. Israel launched a preemptive strrike. Israel then captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the Gaza Strip and all of the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt. More Palestinians and Jews became refugees and terrorism became more common.

    Israel built on the land that they took in the war. Settlments refer to villages that Israel built on land they took. Terrorists attcked the settlements with suicide bombs. It was hard to protect the settlements because it took time for the army to get there.

    On the holliest jewish day of the year (Yom Kippur) Israel was attacked by Syria and Egypt. Israel fought back and the fighting continued for the rest of the month. At the end all land taken was returned and all of the prisoners of war are returned

    Egypt and Israel sign a peace agreement
    The U.S.A. has been trying to help bring peace in the Middle East. Due to it's efforts Egypt agreed to sign a treaty with Israel. The treaty made Egypt reconize Israel as a state and in return Israel gave back all the land they took for Egypt and all the Egyptian prisoners of war.

    Palistine attacked northern Israel. Israel then attacked Palistines that lived in Lebanon. During the war Israel was able to take a lot of land. Israel withdrew most of its troop from Lebanon in 1985. The troops that remained prevented Terrorist attacks directed at Israel.

    Arabs that lived in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank revolted agenst Israel with suicide bombings. The Israel army was not prepared to fight the terrorist. Many Arabs and Jews died. The fighting continued until the Oslo Accords were drafted in 1993.

    The Oslo Accords were a set of agreements. Both partys signed a DOP (Declaraction Of Principles) As part of the agreements Israel had to remove there military from the Gaza Strip. Israel had the right to defend itself. For the first time the POL reconized Israel as a country.

    The U.S.A. helped bring peace between an Arab nation and Israel. Jordan and Isreal signed a peace treaty. Israel would be reconized as a state and Jordan would get land thta Israel took. Jordan was the second Arab nation to reconize Israel as a state.

    Bill Clinton brought Israel and Arab leaders to Camp David to talk about peace. This was the first major attempt to stop the fighting in the Middle East. They were able to solve small problems but in the end they could not accomplish peace.

    Citizens were mad that peace was not established at Camp David. An Arab Prime Minister entered an area important to both Muslums and Jews with 1000 muslum men. This was percevied as an act of agression and Jews and Muslums fought.
  • Arab Peace Initiative is Proposed

    Arab Peace Initiative is Proposed
    Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia propsed a peace initiative endorsed by the Arab League. It offered Israel peace in return for the Israeli withdrawl from all territories captured in the 1967 War. Israel accepted the proposal, but not all of it's demands. One demand they denied was withdrawing to the pre-1967 borders as a pre-condition.     Israel Begins Constructing the West Bank Barrier
    It is still going on today. Israel decided to build a security barrier that would seperate citizens from terrorist groups in the West Bank. This has reduced the number of suicide bombings in Israel from the Gaza Strip and West Bank. It has been criticized for dividing Palestinians from their lands.   • The Roadmap for Peace is Proposed

    The Roadmap for Peace is Proposed
    It was proposed by the "Quartet", which is made up of U.S., Russia, European Union and United Nations. The roadmap involves recipricol steps to ultimstley get an independent Palestinian State and a secure Israel. It was divided in to three sections and they haven't progressed past the first.     Israel Disengages from Gaza
    Ariel Sharon, prime minister of Israel, moved ahead with the policy of "disengagement", or physical separation of Israel and Palestinian territories. He thought that Israel should withdraw from the Gaza Strip. It was very controversial because Israelis who lived in the Gaza Strip didn't want to leave. Israelis in Israel and on the West Bank demonstrated support for the Israelis living in Gaza. Israel decided to leave the territory, so Palestinians could have a place to govern themselves.

    Hamas was a group of terrorists that wanted to destroy Israel and kill Jews. They were elected in to the Palestinian Authorite's legislature. People believe they were elected because of the previous government being corrupt. They have claimed many terrorists attacks. Many western nations imposed sanctions and suspended aid to Palestinian authority. They declared these sanctions would be lifted once Hamas saw Israel should exist.
  • The 2006 Lebanon War

    The 2006 Lebanon War
    Hezbollah, a radical Islamist organization, crossed the Lebanon-Israel border and attacked an Israeli army unit. At the same time it started launching rockets in to Israeli cities and towns. To respond, Israel started to lauch air strikes on suspected Hezbollah military targets. Hezbollah used a human shield strategy. There were many civilians killed and injured. It was resolved in August of 2006 with the UN Cease Fire Resolution 1701.

    There had been a great tension between Hamas and PLO since Hamas won the Palestinian election. This made Hamas militiants to attack Fatah members throughout Gaza. This caused the Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas, to dissolve the Hamas government. Today, Hamas contols Gaza and the Palestinian Authority controls the West Bank. Western sanctions to the Palestinian Authority have been lifted since the Hamas government dissolved.

    Israel attack Hamas targets in Gaza as an attempt to stop rocket attacks on Southern Israel and disrupt terrorist infrastructure and weapons smuggling. Hundreds of militiants were killed, but since Hamas was based in and lauched attacks from urban areas, there were so many civilian casualties. Gaza's economy and buildings were heavily damaged.

    Israel and Egypt began to blockade Gaza. They made evrything be checked to keep Hamas from smuggling weapons. Some argue that the blockade is illeagal.The UN investigative committee ruled it legal.6 ships sent sail to destroy the blockade. After miscommunication, Israeli commandos went on to the ships and started attacking. Israel gained control of the ship and sent it to Ashdod. This led to a severe deterioration between Turkey and Israel, who were allies.

    Citizens in Arab states began to protest against autocratic and oppressive governments. Protests spread throughout Tunisia to the rest of the Arab world. The Tunisian president left the country on January 14th, 2011. The Egyptian president resigned ono February 11th. Protests occured in Algeria, Jordan, Libya, Bahrain, Syria, Morrocco, Oman, Yemen, and other countires as well. The Arab-Israeli conflict is ongoing and still not cleared up.
