Ancient Ghana is located in West Africa in the area between the Senegal and Niger rivers. It is named after the medieval Ghana Empire, but the actual name of the Empire was Wagadugu. Ghana was controlled by Sundiata in 1240 AD. Ending date was 1600 A.D.

Great Zimbabwe

during the country’s LateIron Age. The monument, which first began to be constructed in the 11th century and which continued to be built until the 14th century, spanned an area of 722 hectares (1,784 acres) and at its peak could have housed up to 18,000 people. Ending date was 1400.

Yoruba

Mutapa

16th century the Mwene Matapa’s realm was invaded by the Portuguese, who moved in from the east coast beginning in the 1530s. When the reigning Mwene Matapa attempted to expel them in 1629, they deposed him and forced his successor to grant them extensive trading and mining privileges. Ending date was the 17th century.

Songhai originated in a small principality in West Africa. Songhai began to rise when Sonni Ali Ber had come to power. Songhai was famous for its universities and pivotal trading city of Jenne. Ended in 1592 A.D
