A2 Media Studies

  • Creating my Blog

I created my student portfolio in this day, the first thing I did on my blog was analyse a short film. I designed it of course to my liking and added some pictures and features like links ans buttons. Yes, it was basic as I still had not taken ahold of how the webpage (WIX) worked. So I had a long way to go still.

  • Editing my blog

My blog only had one post at the beginning of the month and it was still very basic and simple - however, I added another post pitching ideas and changed the photos on it, so it would look more professional. At this point, I started storyboarding ideas for the short film package I'd chosen. I had in mind something linked with insomnia issues - I nresearched some short films and then decided to make a short about the struggles of insomnia during the day.
  • January's Update

In January I had already posted some posts analysing shorts and planning my video so it didn't look that boring anymore. My blog was still a work on process but I was focusing on my Minor task (Webpage and Postcard Production) and Major task (Short film and blog, less on my blog midst January). I storyboarded the short during the Christmas holidays and I already had planned the different dates where we were going to film.
  • Filming the video!

Filming the short was very interesting as I realised many things work, and some, don't always end up looking too good. For example, when I was filming the montage scene in my room - well, the lighting was horrible and we ended up having videos that could not even be watched. It was a MESS. We were able to fix it as the purple light in my room was not too dark in comparison to the blue one so we took advantage of the situation. In the end, the low lighting made the whole montage seem eerie!
  • Focusing on my minor task

I had already filmed 1/4 of my short so I then took a step back and started doing the minor task, a postcard production. This postcard production was very challenging for me as Photoshop wasn't my stronsuit, however, I was able to get ahold of the app and create a really good postcard. I chose a photo of the protagonist and edited it to make it seem dark and to follow the conventions of thrillers. I added a logo, an interesting text and even a QR code! The final product looks really frightening!
  • Creating the webpage

I created a webpage for the Short film where audiences could buy the tickets for the short. It took me a few days to make it impeccable and foolproof as I wanted it to look as competent as possible. The final product looks really professional - however, I asked my classmates for some feedback as I'm a bit of a perfectionist. They said that some links didn't work and that a link to a mental help webpage should be added. I addressed the feedback and now it's PERFECT.
  • Finishing Filming

I filmed what I had in mind and every scene ended up looking great. A technique I used really helped me; filming every clip at least twice and always have EXTRA footage. this made the editing process a bit easier too as having so many footage made, in a way, have a large choice of clips for every scene. From time to time the actress and I laughed during videos and interrupted the filming process, something I shoul've taken control of. However, the videos en3ded up looking great.
  • Editing

Editing was a bit challenging for me as I didn't have an editing program and couldn't afford one so I asked a friend to lend me their laptop as they had Adobe Premiere Pro on it - I know how to use the program as these last few years I've had to use it for media studies. I started using the program in Year 10 and since then it's been really striaghtforward and simple. In my opinion editing is calming as you have the option to do anything you want with your content.
  • Continuing the editing!

My friend and I are pretty close so in the timespan of a week I edited the video at his house. The scenes in the beginning were very effortless to edit as the clips were long and the transitions were simple. Nevertheless, when I had to do the montages, the fact that the cuts were so fast and the sound effects had to be edited too; I had a bit of a confusing time. In the end I was able to edit the video; but I did have a rough time though!
  • Finishing Editing!

I got feedback on my video from my teacher. Coronavirus was affecting my city, and my friend and I couldn't meet - however, just before the lockdown of Malaga, he came to my house and I finished editing. Beause I wasn't going to be able to film more, the editing process was simple. I just had to ask my friend to re-record the voiceovers and then to make the sound consistent throughout the video. I also changed the hallway scene a bit in terms to make the video less jumpy/clumsy.
  • Working towards final edit

After I got feedback from my teacher, I did more analysis on my blog and added codes and conventions for my short film genre - THRILLER. I had already finished the minor task and the editing was finished. Then I started planning my Creative Critical Reflection and the last thing I had to do was a compulsory task, where I analysed different short films from A level students. I also added screenshots to the ones I had already done, to make them more entertaining and descriptive.
  • COVID-19 OUTBREAK

Covid-19 has heavily affected the city of Malaga. Everyone is on lockdown and some of my work has been affected by it: I wasn't able to finish the filming process because of the lockdown and the editing had to be done in a rush.
