Salva's village was split into two groups. One group was made up of men, and the other was made up of women, children, and elders. The teenage boys were classified as men and were sent to be soldiers.

Marial was killd by a lion, which had made Salva scared. But his uncle made him feel safe. Salva and his uncle are going across the Nile River over to the ocean. After that is Ethiopia, like Marial said.

Salva had never been hungry at home before because of all the cattle his family had. Then after the war started, he has been hungry everyday. Salva was amazed by what he saw at the island where people fished and worked in the Nile River.

Salva is at the barn all alone and the woman lets Salva stay. Then the woman must leave him for the dry season.

Salva went to school during only rainy season and moved away his village during the dry season. While he was in school a war had begone out of no where.

Salva and his uncle made it to the desert. Now they are making their way to Ethiopia.

Salva meets a new friend called Mariel. Together they walk east towards Ethiopia.

Nya was walking somewhere very far while carrying something.

Nya went on a long walk. At the place that she was at, there was thorns on the ground. A thorn got stuck on her foot and she had to take it out.

Nya goes to the pond everyday to collect water.

Nya's family moves to the big lake when the rain stopped.

While Nya's family is at the pond the men has to go hunting for food. Nya's mom always gets worried.

Akeer gets sick while walking to water with Nya.

Nya is collecting muddy water.

Nya's parents took Akeer to where the doctors are. The doctor said to not drink dirty water. The water must be boiled for 200 seconds, but there is not enough water to boil because all the water would be gone.

Nya's uncle is leading her to the water.
