In 1642 the Ciivil War began. It ended in 1651. It was a fight between the Parliament (Roundheads) and Royalists (Cavaliers). The Parliament ended up winning on September 3, 1651.

King Charles I of England was not at good ends with the Parliament. And he wanted more and more money. So he made something called ship money. Basically, a tax for shipping goods and trade.

Parliament puts King Charles I in prison. After that, he was put to death because he refused.

England neede a new ruler. Thats when Oliver Cromwell came along. He did not want to be called a king because all of the previous kings were not liked, and were not very good kings. So he was called a leader instead of a king.
