William and his troops were devastated at the Battle of Falkirk. This was a major failing after the Scottish had heralded so many victories and felt a sense of triumph. It resulted in the eventual capture and garotting of William.

August 23 1305. William was hung, drawn and quartered. He was decapitated and his head was displayed as a sign of English victory over Scotland and its proud rebellious people.
