  • Washington's Proclamation of neutrality

    Washington, believing his new nation too weak in terms of economic and military advancements, declared the United States neutral in order to prevent going to war with great Britain as an ally of France.
  • Jay Treaty

    A treaty proposed by John Jay. An attempt to prevent war between the US and Britain. The United States gave most favored nation trading status to Britain, and acquiesced in British anti-French maritime policies.
  • Washington's Farewell Address

    The letter before Washington’s resigning. In the letter he spoke about the dangers of permanent alliances with other countries.
  • Tecumseh

    Shawnee Native American chief born in 1768 at Columbus, Ohio. He opposed the United States during the early 1800s and attempted to organize a confederation of tribes to resist white settlement.
  • Impressment of Sailors

    A reason (or cause) for the war of 1812. This was the act of capturing and imprisoning us sailors and forcing them to fight in foreign services, often times against their own people.

    People who supported war, especially someone who favored war with britain in 1812.
  • Chesapeake- Leopard Affair

    Naval fight that occurred in Norfolk Virginia, June 22nd of 1807. Between the British warship HMS Leopard and an American frigate USS Chesapeake. A contributing factor to the war of 1812.The British ship searched the American ship for British Naval Deserters.
  • Embargo Act of 1807

    An Embargo forbidding all foreign commerce.
  • War of 1812 Begins

    War breaks out between Great Britain and the United States because of these four reasons: Impressment of sailors, Great Britain supplying the Natives with weapons, Great Britain violating the Treaty of Paris, and Great Britain interfering with, restricting, and attempting to destroy American trade.
  • Tecumseh (Battle of Thames)

    Battle of Thames Took place in 1813 where the British and native Americans were defeated and Tecumseh was killed. This defeated resulted in the remaining Native Americans in backing out of the alliance with the British.
  • Hartford Convention

    A series of meetings in which the New England Federalist party met to talk about their grievances concerning the war of 1812. Began on December 15, 1814 and ended on January 5, 1814. They threatened succession.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    A treaty signed in Belgium that officially ended the war of 1812.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    A treaty had been signed days before that officially ended the war of 1812, but “news was slow to cross the pond” and the two sides met in a battle. Britain invaded New Orleans in hopes to take over and control access to the Mississippi river (therefore having control over trade).
