  • Impressment

    Britain's Royal Navy sent officers to board American ships to inspect the crew and seize any sailors accused of being deserters from British ships.
  • Washington’s Proclamation of Neutrality

    Stated that the US was neutral in the fight between Britain and France.
  • Jay Treaty

    The treaty allowed Americans to trade with Great Britain. Jay was not successful in negotiating an end to the impressment of American sailors, which later became a key issue that led to the War of 1812.
  • Washington’s Farewell Address

    Washington's letter stating that he was refusing a third term. It gave the American people some words of advice to help the US keep to its values. It also was an attempt to unite the people after the Jay Treaty due to the harsh backlash against it.

  • Chesapeake-Leopard Affair

    The HMS Leopard surprise-attacked the USS Chesapeake and charged the crew for desertion. One was hanged, and another was relieved from duty. This infuriated the Americans and eventually led him to issue the Embargo of 1807.
