    Impressment of sailors

    This was the practice of Britain's Royal Navy sending officers to board American ships. They also inspected the crew and seized the sailors that were accused of running away from British ships. This was one of the many causes that led to the War of 1812.
  • Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality

    Washington issued this to define the policy of the United States because of the war that was spreading in Europe. France and Britain were at war and this pledged the United States to "pursue a course friendly and impartial".
  • Jay's Treaty

    This was used to maintain peace between British and the United States. This treaty was very unpopular because it didn't really settle anything between America and Britain. Jay didn't succeed in opening up the profitable British West Indies trade to Americans.
  • Washington's farewell address

    Washington warned the forces about the separation of the nation because of political parties. He always wanted to guide future generations ad to talk about how the union was weak and easy to attack.
  • Chesapeake-Leopard Affair

    This was an engagement off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia. When the British commander asked for permission to search the ships for runaways. The American commander refused and the captain of the Leopard responded with a barrage of broadsides, this killed 3 Americans and wounded 18.
  • Embargo Act 1807

    This was Jefferson's way of resisting British and French molestation of U.S. merchant ships carrying war materials without using violence. This was also a trade embargo on all foreign nations that enacted by the United States.

    War Hawks

    These were members of Congress that put pressure on President James Madison to declare war against Britain. They wanted to go to war for expansionist tendencies and they wanted Britain to stop seizing American sailors and force them to serve in the British Navy.
  • Battle of Tippecanoe

    Governor Harrison gathered about 1,000 men to attack the confederacy's headquarters. When America lost at Tippecanoe this made Tecumseh to ally the rest of his forces with Great Britain
  • War of 1812 begins

    President James Madison signed a declaration of war against Great Britain and this was how the war began.
  • Tecumseh Death

    Harrison invaded Canada which forced the British and Tecumseh to flee. Harrison then pursued them to the Thames River where Tecumseh was killed. The rest of his followers ended up moving to Indian reservations.
  • Hartford Convention

    This was a secret meeting of Federalist delegates from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont in Hartford, Connecticut. They wanted to protect New England and to supply financial aid to New England's bad trade economy.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    This was the treaty that ended the war of 1812. This required all conquered land to be returned.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    The British marched to New Orleans in hopes of capturing the city, they wanted to separate Louisiana from the rest of the US. This was the last armed engagement between the US and Britain.
