    Janes Madisonhad helped to write the constitution.
    He also helped pass the Bill of Rights.
    During Madisons presidentcy Americans felt his approach was to timid.
    He had planned to keep the us out of war until 1812 when his plan failed. .

  • War Hawks Take Power

    • War Hawks had a strong sense of nationalism.
    • They felt that Britian was treating the u.s. thought as if it was still a British colocny
    • They were willing to fight a war to defend american rights
    • War Hawks felt that winning a war against britian would bring peace and safety

  • Britian Blockades American Ports

    • To prevent the US from trading British warships some american ports.
    • Americans killed at least 32 British dead or wounded on one boat.
    • New York Harbor , a brief broke out between america and a British ship.
    • The US and britian got even closer to war.

    • The USS Constitution defeated the British Warships Guerriere.
    • American sailors nicknamed the Constitution " Old Ironsides" because of the fierce artillary that bounced off it.
    • To the americans it seemed as if the constitution was made of iron.

    • British warships bombarded the fort throughout the night.
    • Francis Scott Key watched the attack at dawn.
    • The Americans had beaten off the attack.
    • Key wrote a poem that he called the Star Spangled Banner.

    • Oliver Hazard Perry had no fleet so he desighned one and built his own ships.
    • The British battered perrys own ship and left it helpless.
    • Perry took his flag down and rowed over to another american ship.
    • Captain Perry wrote his message of victory " we have met the enemy and they are ours"
