    Canute

    Was Danish king of England. Canute returned and defeated Ethelred's son to win the English throne in 1016. At first he ruled ruthlessly, killing English opponents and appointing Danes in their places. He proved an effective ruler who brought peace and prosperity to England, issued an important law code, and became a strong supporter of the church.

    Henry ruled England from 1154 to 1189. He strengthed the royal courts of Justice by sending royal judges to every part of England at least once a year.

    Alfred The Great

    The King of Wessex in Southwestern England. He defeated the Danes at the Battle of Edington and next year he took the offensive and captured London, a success that brought all the English not under Danish rule to accept him as king.
