President Madison Takes Office
*As president Madison hoped not not to go to war.
*America wanted to stand up against foreign countries to expand their nation.
*They had found out that the native Americans had been given guns by the British again.

War Hawks Take Power
Many New England merchants wanted Britain to restore trade so members of congress from the south and west called for war with Britain so they made a group called the war hawks. They had a strong sense of nationlism in pride and devotion to one's country. -
Relations with Great Britain Worsen
In the spring the British kept on impressing sailors. New attacks began on the frontier settlements,and the British kept on giving the indians guns. -
Congress Declare's War on Britain
James Madison had asked congress to declare war on Britian. The house of represenatives had a 79 to 49 in favor of war. Senate had a 19 to 13 in favor of war. -
America is not Ready for War
The Americans are not ready for war because Jefferson had a small federal government on defense. The navy had 16 ships to fight with against the British fleet. After the British had attacked and Burned Washington D.C. they moved moved to Baltimore there first objective was to secure Fort McHenry. Which defened the harbor. On September 13 Francis Scott Key wacth the attack, saw the American flag still was still. Then he wrote a peom called "The Star-spangled Banner". The peom became a popular song and is now are national anthem. -
