    Tensions with Britain when President Madison took office. Americans were very angry at Britain when they had amed the Native Americans in the NorthWest. They were also mad that Britain was still countinuing impressement of American soildiers. Most Americans they thought the were losing there honor.

    In 1810 two strong Nationalists, Henery Clay of Kentucky, and John C. Calhoun of South Carolina took power of the House of Representitives. They were apart of a group called War Hawks. These were the people that were eager for war with Britain.

    Realations with Britain worsened steadily in the early months of 1812. In Spring Britain said that they would continue to impressing sailors. Also Native Americans in the Northwest began new attacks on frontier settlements. In the month of June, Congress declared war on Britain.

By 1814 the British navy had 135 navy warships blocking American ports. After reinforcing there troops they had every single one of American ports blocked at the end of the war.

    Even before the war War Hawks were demanding an invasion of Canada. They thought that the canadians would welcome the chance to throw off British rule. So in July 1812 General William Hull invaided Canada. He soon retreated unsure with himself beacause he thought he would not have enough soildiers. The British soon took advantage of this event.     One major sea battle was fought in the begining of the war. The USS constitution defeated the British warship Guerriere in a feirce battle. From American traditions the sailors nicknamed the Constitution "Old Ironsides" because British artillery fire bounced of of the ship thick wooden hull.
