    The War of 1812 was a close to six year war between the United States and Britain.
  • President Madison takes office.

    James Madison was elected president on March 4th, 1809 becoming the 4th president.
  • War Hawks take power.

    War Hawks take power.
    Relations with Britain got worse still. They blocked American ports and impressed U.S sailors. Members of Congress that would soon become War Hawks were people with a strong sense of national government.

    By this time, everyone just wanted to fight. Bad things kept happening, the British still impressed American sailors, blocked ports and after a while completely stopped U.S trade. Finally, on June 18th, 1812, war began.

    When the U.S declared war, it was bad for both America & Britain. Britain was now at 2 wars, and America wasn't prepared. The U.S had only 16 ships and less than 7,000 men.

    The war took both America & Britain by suprise and neither of them could really spare troops to fight. The president at the time didn't want to spend money on America's defense. And the U.S navy had 16 ships against the huge British ships.

    U.S troops invade Canada and this really aggravated the British people so they boarded American ships, impressed the sailors, and blockaded the ports.

    William Hull moved his troops into Canada and they tried to trick the Canadians that the Americans wanted to help them but Canada didn't want them there and tried to forse them out even though they didn't have well trained troops.

    Americans were sailing near Newfoundland with their boat "The Constitution" and the Britians with their boat "Querriere" and the U.S attacked and won.

    In September, 1813, Americans wanted complete control of Lake Erie so they sailed against the Brits though the Brits attacked the American ship first, and The U.S still had victory.

    The Brits retreated from Detroit to Canada and Henry Harrison pursued them to fight. Americans wont the Battle of Thames even though Tecumseh died fighting and the Indian confederation fell apart.

    Natives suffered from defeat, and Jackson took comand of forces defeating the creeks, they made a treaty and the creeks were forced to give up millions of acres of lands.

    Brits sailed and landed 30 miles from D.C and Madison watched this and his wife waited for him. She couldn't stay in the building as it would burn, so she grabbed some important papers and a portrait of George Washington and fled so she wasn't in the white house when it burned.

    British bombed the Baltimore harbor on this day. Luckily, the flag still stood the next day and Francis Sckoot Kry saw this and wrote a poem about it and it eventually became the national anthem of the United States.

    Brits attacked Fort McHenry and Fransic Scott Key witnissed it and he saw that the american flag was still standing tall so he wrote this song and it became the national anthem.

    Delegates met in Harford, Connecticut. Most of these people were federalists and they didn't like the war or the president. They all threatened to leave the union but all this ended quickly because of the treaty.

    Britain got tired of war and peace talks began in Ghent, Belguim. On Christmas eve of 1814, they signed a treaty here and and the war finally stopped things slowly went back to the way they were before the war.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    In very late 1812, the British prepared to attack New Orleans. On January 8th of the following year, 1815, the Brits attacked and it sort of backfired, as 2,000 British men died during this battle, while only 7 Americans died. Once again, Americans won and cheered for victory.
