When President Madison took office there was high tension. Americans were mad because Britain was arming Native Americans. Americans resented the continued impressment of Americansailors by the british.

War Hawks were people who were eager for war. Clay,Calhoun and his supporters were called war hawks. Many New Englanders opposed the War Hawks because they thought it would harm trade.

The relations with Britain worsened steadily. In the spring, the British would continue impressing sailors. Meanwhile Native Americans began new attaks on the fronteir settlements.

Britian was not willing to meet American demends to avoid war. Providing Native Americans was one way of protecting Canada.

Jefferson's spending cuts had weakended the army. America was confident that they would win. The navy only had 16 war ships and fewer than than 7,000 men.

In the first days of the war Britian set up a blockade on the American coast. A blockade is the action of shutting down of a port. Britian had 135 warships blockading.

War hawks were demading an ivasion of Canada. They expected Canadians to welcome the chance to throw off British rule.

The USS Constitution defeated the British warship Guerriere. It was called Old Ironside. The British shots bounced off the side of the ship.

The battle was a three hour battle. This battle took place in Put-In-Bay. Both sides knew how important it was to control the lake.

As the British and there Native American allies retreted. The Americans porsued them. They followed them and defeated them in the battle of the Thames.

Andrew Jackson took comand of American forces in Georgia. In March 1814 Jackson defeaded the Creeks in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

The new British stradagy was to vattak and burn the nations capital. All in the building had to flee. the British set fire to the building.

The British now focosed on Baltimore. The British first objective was Fort McHenry which deffended the harbor.

On the back of a old envolope hey wrote a poem called the Star Spangled Banner. It told the story of what happend at the fight with Britian.

Some people of the Hartford Convention thought New England states sshould drop off from the U.S. After the treaty the convention quickly ended.

Britian was tired of war. Peace talk began in Ghent, Belgiom. On christmas eve the two sides signed the treaty of Ghent, which ended the war.

The news of the treaty had not reached the United States. In that time they fought one more battle in January 1815. America won a stunning victory at the battle of New Orleans.
