    Just like previous popes, Benedict VIII attepted to claim authority on King Philip IV, and other KIngs at that time. Benedict VIII released an official document stating that kings must obey popes.

    Three years after the release of the Pope's official document on papal authority, King Philip IV takes Bonafice VIII captive and planned for a trial. Bonafice VIII was rescued soon after.

    Pope Bonafice died one month after his captivity. King Philip IV won the fight, popes no longer had authority over kings.
