The life of an Irish imigrant named Timothy Horn

  • The birth of Timohty Horan

    The birth of Timohty Horan
Today is the day that I, Timothy Horan was born. I was born in the city Dublin in Ireland with my mother, sister, and oler brother. My father had left when he found out that my mother was pregenant. We were not rich but certainly not poor. I guess you could say we were middle class.
  • Getting ready to go to America

Getting ready to go to America
It is some years later. I am 16 now and I must find work to supprt my family. My older brother died in a tragic accident and I am now the man of the house. There is no work here so I am leaving for America in a few hours. I am hoping that I will be able to find work there. The only sad part about this is that I must leave my sister and mother for a short while to find work and get them some money for food.
  • Arriving in America for the first time

Arriving in America for the first time
I have finally reached America. Ellis island is filled with imingrants just like me looking for work. Suddenly the relization of what is going on hits me. For the first time since I left I am having doubts. The people here are very nice and helping me with my stuff, some though give me disgusted looks as I walk by. I gather the few things I brought and head out onto American soil for the first time.
  • Looking for a job

This world is a cruel world. I have been to over 20 interviews and each job wnats to give me less and less money just because I am Irish. It just is not right. I am currently on my way to Chicago where hopfully I will be able to find a good paying job. If i can not find a job i will be forced to live on the streets for the rest of my life. I do not want to live on the street. They are covered in human waste and animal waste. It is disgusting and i can not wait to have my own home off the streets
  • Chicago

I finally found work in Chicago at a meat handling place. The job is alright. The boss has a lot of pity on me though. I must look like a mess due to the fact that i haven't taken a shower or a bath in 8 months. I have been leaving on the streets looking alll over the pkace wishing that i could go back to Irelans, but i would not be able to because I do not have any money at all. This job should help....I hope.
  • Deciding to go home

The job was horrible. It was so bad that I quit. The place was very dirty and mouse droppings were found in the bread. Someone by the name Upton Sinclair came by and was asking everyone questions about the working conditions. He said he was going to help us out in anyway he could. That man was a good man because he did help us out but i could not stand another moment at that awful place. I am heading back to Ireland. It has been a couple years since I have seen my mother so I am very ecited.
