    St Stephens was proclaimed the Cathedral of the Diocese after the separation of the New South Whales and Queensland colonies.

    Arrival of Bishop James Quinn and the Six Sisters of Mercy.
    Bishop James Quinn, five Priests and the Six Sisters of Mercy arrived on the Yarrayarra and they were extremely surprised at the poverty of the community and then he committed himself to rising the social and economical status of Catholic Education. Mother Vincent Witty and the Six Sisters of Mercy established the first Catholic High School "All Hallows"

    This was the first school to be entirely staffed by lay teachers.

    In 1870 the was a great division between the Irish Catholic and the English Protestant and that caused everyone wanting to keep Catholic Church and State separate education separation which caused more laws to come in about this.

    five years after the great division between the Irish Catholic and English Protestant new laws were passed to remove state funding for Catholic Schools and to keep state and church separate and to give free, secular and compulsory education to students.

    In 1887 when the New Archdiocese of Brisbane happened came a new Archbishop, Robert Dunne. He was the second Roman Catholic Bishop of Brisbane and he was the first Archbishop of Brisbane when the new Diocese kicked in.

    When he became Archbishop he saw the need to grow the Catholic Education schools.
  • Great Depression

    In 1929 the Great Depression hit Australia lasting from 1929 to 1945. The Great Depression ended up lowering the staff in catholic school and enlarging class sizes up to almost seventy per class.

    Bernard Oshay
    In 1943 Bernard Oshay was appointed the Diocese Inspecter.

    In 1948 the roll of Diocesan Inspector changed to Diocesan Director Of BCE and 26 schools opened.

    Funding Finally granted
    In 1962 funding was finally granted to Catholic School. But the funding still wasn't a sufficient supply.

    In 1965 Patrick Mary O'Donnel was appointed to Archbishop of Brisbane and this was the formation of BCE office.
