    After the death of Pope Gregory XI, The College Cardinals chose an Italian pope : Pope Urban VI. But his passion for reform and arrogant personality drove the cardinals to elect another pope a couple months after.

    The council of Constance tried to end it by choosing third pope, but at this time there were three popes. All the popes where forced to resign with the help of the Holy Roman Emperor, which ended the Great Schism.
