Convening of the Estates General
This was the first time the Estates General had met in 150 years. Louis XVI called the Estates General because he was out of money. -

The 3rd estate delegates met in a tennis court and pledged to not leave until they had written up a new constitution. -

Angry peasants stormed the Bastille for gunpowder so they could defend themselves. -
The Great Fear
A period of panic and riots by peasants because they were afraid that the King was going to try to capture/kill them. -

A declaration signed by the National Assemby that makes all men equal in rights. -
Women's March to Versailles
Angry women peasants march to Versailles over the increased price of bread. They end up taking the Queen and King back to Paris. -

Louis and Marie try to free France with their kids. They end up being arrested and taken back to Paris. -
Constitution of 1791
This constitution declared France to be a Constitutional Monarchy where most of the power was in the Legislative Assembly. -
Brunswick Manifesto
Proclamation from the Duke of Brunskwick saying that if any members of the Royal Family were harmed, he would harm them. This backfired on the Duke and the French people ended up arresting the Royal Family. -
National Convention
The National Convention was elected to create a new constitution after the abolishment of the monarchy. -

This is the period of violence in the French Revolution where up to 40,000 (mostly citizens of Paris) were executed/killed. -

Napoleon Becomes Emperor
Napoleon wanted to become emperor and a popular vote of the people showed that they wanted him as their emperor. He crowned himself to show that he was more powerful than the Church. -

Battle at Cape Trafalgar (off the west coast of Spain) and was between the British Royal Navy and the French and Spanish. The British Royal Navy won. -
Continental System
A series of decrees that Napoleon used to try and destroy Great Britian's trade with any other countries. It failed and led to more war. -
Peninsular War
War that pitted the French against the British, Spanish, and the Portugese. The French lost. -
Invasion of Russia
War between the Russians and the French over trading. The French lost. -
Exile to Elba
After the failure of the Russian invasion, France's troops were broken up and with Europe united against him, Napoloeon offered to step down from the throne so his son could take it. This offer was denied and Napoleon was exiled. -
Battle of Waterloo
Napoleon escaped exile, gathered his troops, and fought against the combined efforts of the Bristish, Germans, Dutch, Prussians, and the Belgians. Napoleon and the French lost. Napopleon was exiled again and the Treaty of Paris was signed. -
Exile to St. Helena
After escaping exile and losing the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon was exiled again. This time he was exiled to St. Helena and he would not escape.
