Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence River region in search of a passageway to Asia and precious metals. The French lost interest in the region when Cartier was not able to find a way to Asia. However, the Basque and Breton fisherman who regularly sailed the gulf of the St. Lawrence River, communicated with Native nations and traded diffrent objects for fur.

In 1608, Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec in order to facilitate fur trade with the Ameridians. The name "Quebec" comes from the Amerindian word meaning "narrowing". They used this word because Quebec is where the Saint Lawrence rivers narrows down.

In 1627, the King of France mandated the Company of 100 Associates to populate the colony which at that time had about one hundred European habitants. The company attracted several hundreds colonist, but this was still 4000 under what was predicted.

In 1642, Paul Chomedey founded Ville-Marie close to the Iroquois village of Hochelaga along with other people such as the nurse Jeanne Mance. The purpose of the settlement was to evangelize the Amerindians, but it soon became a major trading post.
