I remember a beginning love of reading and writing emerging from a young age. I would read on a regular basis at home, with the encouragement of Mrs Rosetti. As well, I can still recall having to draw pictures and explain to Mrs Rosetti what I was trying to show in my pictures and her scribing for me.

The biggest memory of this from this particular year is our "communication books" which we were required to write in every day for the last portion of the last period. It was time that was alotted for us to quietly sit down and write whatever we wanted about what we did that day. We could write any details, with the purpose to be for our parents to see what we did that day. We would bring these books home to have our parents read and inital and the next day Miss Sziedemen would do the same.

What I remember most was that one of our main activities throughout the entire year was "creative writing" during which we were allowed to write a creative story about whatever we wanted. We would do a rough draft, do peer editing and do a good copy that would be written neatly with pictures and put into a hard cover.

    Mr DeTullio - Grade 4
This was the year we did the "Speech Arts" for the first time and Mr DeTullio chose my speech to go on and be presented in front of all the junior students in the gym. I was super nervous and it seemed like a very scary task, however through his positive mentorship and coaching it turned out to be a very positive experience

This was on of my more negative school experiences. This particular teacher ran her classroom like a kindergarten room and treated us like small children, instead of like grade sixes. As a result, I find myself remembering nothing specific about language arts, or any subject for that matter, as the only thing I remember from this particular year is this negative experience and remembering the frustration I felt.
  • Grade 8 - Mrs Cormier

    Grade 8 - Mrs Cormier
Grade 8 is an important transition year. A lot of time in this year was spent preparing us for the expectations we would face the following year in high school. As a result, what I remember from this year of language arts is many reports, teaching of formal essay writing skills, and teaching skills to interpret texts and look for the deeper meaning. This is when I really started to enjoy "english" as a subject and it would even start to become my favourite subject in highschool.
