    Impressment of sailors

    The impressment of American sailors started between 1793 and went on till 1812. The British impressed more than 15000 US sailors to supplement their navy for their conflict with Napoleonic Wars with France. By 1812 the US had enough and so declared war on Britain.
  • Washington’s Proclamation of Neutrality

    Washington’s Proclamation of Neutrality

    A formal announcement issued by U.S. President George Washington. This announcement declared the nation neutral during the conflict between France and Great Britain. This prohibited any American assistance to any country at war. Washington did not want to enter any war since he felt the nation was not ready. If the nation were to join it would make it vulnerable to foreign invasions.

    Representatives from both the US and Great Britain signed Jay's Treaty. This treaty settled issues between the two countries that not had been solved since American independence. This treaty assisted in dodging war between the two nations.

    Washington announce he did not want to serve a third term as President. Washington goal was to motivate people to put aside their opinions on foreign nations. He warns the people about rising political parties and sectionalism as a threat to national unity.

    British warships HMS leopard boarded the American USS Chesapeake, it surrendered after firing one shot. This increased the tension between US and British. The significance was that the incident made the US look bad, led to the Embargo Act of 1807, and a major cause of the War of 1812.

    This act closed US ports to all exports and did not allow imports from Britain. This act was in response to British and French disputes with keeping peace in the US merchant ships during the Napoleonic Wars. This had a negative affect on the economy because agricultural prices and earnings declined, any shipping related industries also crumbled, existing markets were suffering, and unemployment increases.

    A Shawnee warrior chief who organized a Native American confederacy in efforts to create an Indian state governed by itself to stop white settlement in the Northwest Territory. He was known for his leadership, compassion, and bravery which earned him respect from Native Americans and Colonists.

    Young politicians from falling from the West and South. Led by Henry Clay. Small group of Jeffersonian Republicans, wanted war against Britain, they wanted to punish them for hurting American honor. Madison was in charge and the War Hawks had a large amount of influence in Congress they pushed Madison to take more aggressive approach to the situation which led to war in 1812.

    Madison signed a declaration of war against Great Britain which marked the beginning of the War of 1812. The impact was that it ended the Federalist political party.

    The death of Tecumseh dismantled his pan-Indian alliance in the Northwest Territory. Without him to lead most of the remaining Native Americans in the region moved to the Indian reservations. This marked the end of most Native resistance east of the Mississippi river. Most tribes were forced West.

    A secret meeting in Hartford, Connecticut, it consisted of Federalist delegates from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts. New Hampshire, and Vermont because they were dissatisfied with Pres. The idea was to propose Constitutional amendments and to arrange the military defense of the New England states. The significance was a call to Federal Government to protect New England, and to help with financial aid.

    With this treaty the War of 1812 ended between Great Britain and the US. Britain agreed to give up claims to the Northwest Territory, and both countries came together to end slave trade. The impact would be America gained influence as a type of foreign power.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    Battle of New Orleans

    Because of Napoleon's defeat, British were free to do their war in America. British army attacked and burned Washington in August 1814, failed so they changed plans and attacked New Orleans. Andrew Jackson assembled army won against a well built British force. Took place in the Gulf region. Significance was it marked the state's political incorporation into the Union. This victory also lead to the Star Spangled Banner to be created. Win of the land War of 1812.
