Kelly's Literacy Timeline

  • Bedtime Stories

    Bedtime Stories
When I was growing up, my parents would always read bedtime stories to my sister and I right before bed. We shared the same room and would go to the bottom bunk to hear the story. My sister and I would always look forward to story time. Each night we were read to for 30 minutes. This would relate to the 6 T's being Time. Having a consistent pattern for reading and for a certain amount of allotted time is more beneficial for kids while growing up.
  • R.E. Religious Education

    R.E. Religious Education
Growing up as a child my family was very religious and we would go to church every sunday. At church I would always read the bible, which connects to the T of Text. Reading the bible helped me gain experience in texts that were more advanced for me. I also went to Religious Education and would discuss what we read. This would refer to the T of talk, because I would share my ideas and thoughts with others.
  • Pen Pals

    Pen Pals
When I was in 7th grade my class did a Pen Pal project with a school in Chicago, Illinois, Everyday we would write for 60 minutes about any subject that we wanted. I really enjoyed writing and this improved the linguistic system in learning. Because I would read the letters from my pal, and then have to understand them and make meaning of them before I could write one in response. I would use strategies such as sentence stripping and reading text signals in order to make meaning of the letter.
  • Speeches in 8th Grade Literature

    Speeches in 8th Grade Literature
In 8th grade English class public speaking was a big part of it. I have always struggled with public speaking which always made me nervous. I was always scared if I messed up and that everyone would laugh. We also did a group speech as well. This relates to the Talk of text and how public speaking can improve your literacy and understanding of texts. It also relates to the socioculture dimension, because you interact with other students. This affected my feelings on public speaking immensely.
  • Typing Class

    Typing Class
My freshman year of high school I took a typing class. This class was for fun and the point of it was to improve your typing and your writing. This fits in with the sociocultural dimension because it was the use of technology to improve your literacy skills. I enjoyed this class and felt more confident with my typing and writing skills afterwards. Having practice in a literacy area I struggled in made me more successful in the future.
  • Creative Writing Class

    Creative Writing Class
My sophomore year of highschool I took a creative writing class. This class focused on improving your writing and learning different strategies to help you become a better writer. This ties in with the T of Text. We would have to read the prompts and understand them and then write something that was meaningful to us. One good thing about this class was that we got to write about anything we want, which is always good when doing writing prompts.
  • Computer and Online Textbooks

    Computer and Online Textbooks
Entering college I was exposed to a new source of Textbooks. 3 of my 4 classes required online textbooks. This was something very different and something I was not use to. I had to take a class to become familiar with ways to read, and better understand online textbooks. This relates to the T of text. Reading information from a book off a computer was something that I had to get use to and use many strategies in order to be successful. It also relates to sociocultural with the use of technology.
  • Writing for a Newsletter

    Writing for a Newsletter
I was chosen to write a column in my towns newspaper about sports and how they impact the town. This was a very odd experience for me because I had never done anything like it before. I had to proofread my article over 10 times just to make sure it was perfect. This applies to the linguistic part of literacy because of the reading and writing and making interpretations of it. I struggled with the time part of the T's because it was hard for me to write every day and get it done on time.
  • Reflection

After reviewing my timeline I realized a lot of my literacy involved writing. Growing up I was not a big reader and writing impacted me the most. I believe this has affected me as a person because I will never read for pleasure and it only is when I have to. I love writing and try to write almost everyday. I believe the history of my literacy made me out to be a person who likes to express their feelings on paper rather than outloud.
