    In the Middle ages, Physicians were licences after formal training and experience with licensed doctors. This made medical care back then a little bit safer than it used to be before. They were required to read books and even study! However, women were not allowed to practice medicine.

    Jacoba Felicie
    Jacoba Felicie was a Frenchwoman who wanted to practice medicine even though in the Middle Ages it was illegal for females to get a medical licence. When she was caught and tried in court for her illegal activities as a woman in the medical field, she defended herself by claiming "women were sometimes embarrassed to go to a male physician for treatment." The judge went against her and she was forbidden to practice medicine.

    Religion assumed a huge role in health care in the Middle ages. The Muslims Koran taught the rich to care for the poor, the health to care for the sick, and take up social responsibilities. It was not uncommon to find religious hospitals taking care of those in need. The hospitals began to even employ trained nurses.

He was the first person to use the word "cell" to describe the basic unit of life. He would later on invent the microscope which would be a huge development for medical technology.

    Joseph Lister had well thought out idea that if you used carbolic soap to disinfect the instruments and your hands used during surgery, you could stop the spread of pathogens that cause infection. Dr. Lister was widely discredited in his time but today we still disinfect instruments and our hands to stop the spread of pathogens. His work saved millions of lives.
