How the Great Schism came about.

Mar 27, 1378

After Pope Gregory XI died The College of Cardinals then
met in Rome to choose a successor. As they deliberated, they could hear a mob
outside. The mob said they wanted a roman pope or at least an Italian one. once they got an Italian leader they changed their minds right away. They ended up having two popes and once was false. so now two popes were to be excommunicated. have two popes split up the church which started the Great Schism.

How the great schism was resolved.

With the help
of the Holy Roman Emperor, the council forced all three popes to resign. the Council chose a new pope, Martin V, ending the Great Schism but leaving the
papacy greatly weakened.
