Guten Tag und Willkommen zu Deutsch eins!
This was the first thing that my German teacher said to me and it got me incredibly excited to start learning a new language. I was very eager going into this language learning experience. -
by this time I had already gone through 5 lists of German vocabulary sheets and couldn't say a sentence, but could tell you what all the colors were in German.
-
I was no longer excited and was dreading this year
-
I didn't think I could hate German class anymore, but German 2 proved me wrong. This year was all about sentence structure, verb tense, and more vocabulary.
-
I was, again, dreading German at the start but this year was actually different.
-
This year I had a new teacher. She did not assign us lots of homework and make us practice all the technical rules. Instead this teacher had us speak to each other in the best German we could. She assured us it didn't need to be perfect at all she just wanted the other person to understand what you were saying.
-
This last year I improved in my German speaking more than I ever had and it was because I was encouraged to speak and do my best without thinking about all the technicalities.
-
No longer were we tested on the little details instead we would turn in recordings of ourselves speaking German to each other, projects where we were required to speak in our best German, and short essays.
-
As the weeks went by I eventually was excited to go to German and motivated to get better at speaking the language. I wasn't motivated by a grade I actually wanted to be able to communicate better.
