In 1780s, bad weather caused widespread crop failures. Gradually, the price of bread doubled and many faced starvation. Thousands of Parisian women rioted over the price of bread. I think this event is important in the revolution because they had Louis and Marie return to Paris. Their exit signaled a change of power and the radical reforms about to take place.

Rumors in Paris thought Louis wanted to use military force to disband National Assembly or to kill French citizens. A mob searching for gunpowder stormed the Bastille (Paris prison). They paraded with dead men's heads. This is important because this day. is a French national holiday, similar to July 4th, and signals first protest for revolution.

Noblemen made speeches declaring love for equality out of fear. They joined National Assembly in cancelling feudal privileges of 1st and 2nd estate. The Old Regime was then gone. I think this is important because it marks the modern world and removed the feudal system, which is a great achievement.

The National Assembly made statement that included revolutionary ideas. This was partly influenced by the U.S Declaration of Independence. It included the right to liberty, property, resistance to oppression, etc. These rights affect lives of peasants in France, and is also important as a mark in the change of ideas (particularly human rights).

The National Assembly made a new constitution. This created a limited monarchy constitutionally and a new legislative body called the Legislative Assembly. The Legislative Assembly had power to draft laws and to reject or declare war. This event is an important part of the revolution because it greatly diminished the power of the monarchy, and the Legislative Assembly acted as foundation for many more changes to come.

Surrounding nations (e.g. Austria, Prussia) were afraid that the revolution would reach them. Therefore, they criticized France and supported the aristocracy to be back in power. The Legislative Assembly responded by declaring war on them, eventually more countries joined the war. This led to deaths of millions of French people, but helped unify the country.

The Tuileries was where Louis and their family lived. Around 20,000 men and women invaded the Tuileries, and imprisoned the royal family. They also massacred royal guards. This is an important event in the revolution because it prompted the government to abolish the monarchy and establish France as a republic.

Prompted by radicals, the Assembly made the Constitution of 1791 obsolete. They dissolved the assembly. They then called for an election of a new legislature, which resulted in the National Convention. I think this is important in the revolution because it resulted in the abolishment of the monarchy and made France a republic, and people can now vote (only men).

After France was announced republic in 1972, Jacobins (radicals) took control. Robespierre was one of them, when he became leader of the Committee of Public Safety he became a dictator. He executed many people ruthlessly and created terror. I think this event was important because people afterwards grew wary of the terror, and made it possible for the rise of Napoleon (after officials established the Directory).

When he returned from Egypt, friends advised him to take over politically. The government then was also weak and didn't have much support. In a short time, he drove out most of national legislature and became a military dictator. This is an important event because it marks the end of the French Revolution, and they finally have a kind of stable ruler.
