Events Leading to War

  • Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality

    Washington's Proclamation made sure that the US would not go into war. It also made sure that feelings were neutral between France and Britain while they were in conflict
  • Impressment of Sailors (1793-1812)

    Great Britain seized American ships and impressed sailors which caused conflict, which was one main cause of the War of 1812.
  • Jay Treaty

    The British attacked ships dealing with the French and the conflict had made Washington to stop the American shipments overseas. (seized ships) In order to resolve this conflict, the Jay Treaty of 1795 was created, although it was a weak treaty, Washington signed it. It also also trade to flow through for America.
  • Washington's Farewell Address

    In Washington's Farewell Address, Washington warns the people that political parties will be trying to take all the power. He also informs everyone that he will be leaving presidency.
  • Embargo Act

    Thomas Jefferson enforced this act in order to stop American ships from trading with foreign countries.
  • Chesapeake-Leopard Affair

    The British Leopard boarded the American frigate and attacked the USS Chesapeake and harassed the sailors.
  • Tecumseh

    Tecumseh fought in Battle of Tippecanoe allied Indian troops and fought against William Harrison and lost.
  • War of 1812 Begins

    James Madison finally declares war on the British because of restrictions on trade and the attacking of ships
  • War Hawks

    People of the Congress who encouraged President Madison to declare war on the British.
  • Tecumseh

    His death Native American resistance declined and the movement of the Native Americans west of the Mississippi River.
  • Hartford Convention

    A discreet federalist meeting that discussed their concerns about the war of 1812 and James Madison mercantile policies.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    This treaty ended the war between Britain and America while giving back conquered land and allowed commissions in Canada and the US.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    The British made an attack on New Orleans to capture the land, in too which the Americans won. Also prevented the British from seizing ships, which was troublesome with trade. The British retreated and went back to their ships.
