    Started sometime in the first century. It is the most significant because that is why we have the Church. Important people include Jesus as he was the inspiration, Peter and many factions.

    The East-West Schism

    The Great Schism was when Eastern Orthodox Churches and Roman Catholic Churches split in to 2 different branches. This is very significant today because now we have to different types of people under Catholic faith because of this. Important people include Pope Leo, Patriarch Michael, Michael Cerularius.

    The Black Death

    The Black Death was a plague which killed ⅓ of Europe’s in the 1300’s. It was significant to the Church because
    It was both good and bad for the church as there were a lot of good people who helped the sick but also a lot of priests and bishops who would sell ‘indulgences’ to people who were scared of dying.

    Protestant Reformation

    Churches who followed the teachings or protests of Martin Luther split from the Catholic Church. It was significant to the Church because people who were Catholic and were good people decided to separate from the bad side of the Church

    Council of Trent

    The Council of Trent was held in 3 periods. It was organised by the Pope but he never took part in the meetings. The council was called to examine reform. It is important to the Catholic church today because it impacted a long term change on the Church being run. Important people include over 300 bishops and theologians, Pope Paul III and Charles V

    First Vatican Council

    The First Vatican Council was started by the Pope to deal with contemporary problems. It is significant because it dealt with the rising influence of materialism, radicalisation and liberalism. Important people were Pope Pius IX, and about 1000 bishops

    The Second Vatican Council

    The Second Vatican Council is the most significant event in modern Church history. It's mission is to ensure more clarity into the understanding of the Church. It was and still is significant because it is still relevant today and has attempted to look at the church's teachings so it can be more modernised.
  • Mary Mackillop becomes a saint

    When Mary Mackillop was canonised in 2010, it was very significant because she was Australia's first saint and to this day is Australia's only saint.
