Decision Making

  • The Problem

    The Problem
Over the summer I went on a run with my friends. One of them was very dehydrated though, and so about halfway through our run, she passed out!

    Making The Healthy Choice

I used days on this website to separate different topics and to properly space out the events, however, this obviously did not happen over the course of many days :)
  • Should I Include Others?

    Should I Include Others?
I wasn't sure if I should take charge of the situation or allow everyone to put in what they thought we should do to help this girl. I knew that not only could everything could get confusing and complicated if other people's opinions were included, but it could also take us a lot more time to reach a decision. The Online Health Textbook puts it best, "[Since] a group is dominated by various people, [it makes] decision-making very time consuming,"(6).
  • Group decision

    Group decision
However, I eventually decided that a group decision would be the best. The reason I decided this was because it wasn't only me that would be effected by the decision, and more people meant that more background information about what happened could be brought to the table. The Online Health Textbook even states, "When a group gets together to make a decision, it has potential of collecting more and full information,"(6).
  • Our Final Decision

    Our Final Decision
After concluding that our friend was most likely dehydrated, we sent someone to run back and get our coach. He came back and was able to help her. After a few hours she was feeling way better!
  • Alternative Decisions

    Alternative Decisions
If I hadn't been part of a collaborative decision, I might have tried to move my friend and possibly hurt her, or do something else that could have negatively affected her health. As a group we thought about asking someone else for help, but we didn't want to ask someone who didn't know what they were doing, and we also didn't want to try to do anything to our friend because we didn't know what we were doing. I think we made the right choice to send someone back to our coach.
  • Glad We Did It

    Glad We Did It
Ultimately I'm glad we did it as a group, because if we hadn't then I might not have known that she was dehydrated, and I likely would have done something wrong, and would've been held personally responsible for the bad choice I made. Like it says in the Online Health Textbook, "...individuals do not escape responsibilities. They are accountable for their acts and performance,"(6).
