Integrated Teaching Unit

  • First Day of School Acitivities

    Do fun ice breakers, name games, and then I will go over the syllabus for the students.
  • To Kill A Mockingbird Intro

    To Kill A Mockingbird Intro
    I will introduce the book and we will do some introductory reading as a class. Students need to read "To Kill A Mockingbird" chapter 1-5 Due Sept. 5th
  • In Class Activities

    We will do one more ice breaker for the class. Then students will create a poster of their favorite book they have read so far and why.
  • Reading Guide 1

    Reading guide 1: Students will answer study questions alongside the first five chapters of the book.
  • Free Write

    Students will write a free write about TKM and what they think about it so far
  • Group writing activity

    Students will get in groups and create a poster for TKM. They will write the key information they got from the book so far on the back, and draw a picture/ advertisement on the front. Then each group will share out their ideas.
  • Watch videos on race/ racial sterotypes

    Watch these videos and write a quick write about your ideas and connections with TKM. Write connections with real life experiences.
  • Vocabulary lesson 1

    Students will get vocab words and we will go over them together and learn the meanings and how they work in sentences. Students will get take home worksheets to practice
  • Socratic Seminar #1

    The first set of students will be in the middle circle discussing the video and what they wrote in their quick write. They will discuss their views on racial issues and I will help lead them in discussion.
    Outside circle students will listen and take notes
  • Videos on gender

    Watch video on gender and double standards. Students will write a quick write about this and their experiences in the world. They will tie this in with TKM as well.
  • Reading Guide #2

    Reading guide for chapters 6-10 are due today and we will go over the answers in class.
  • Socratic Seminar #2

    The second set of students will be in the middle circle discussing the video and what they wrote in their quick write. They will discuss their views on racial issues and I will help lead them in discussion.
    Outside students will take notes.
  • Mind Map on a character

    Students will get in groups and create a facebook page for one of the characters from TKM. They will share their page at the end to the rest of the class.
  • Vocabulary Quiz

    Vocab worksheets are due, and we will do a small quiz to check that they know and understand the words.
  • Writing Workshop

    We will do a writing workshop about introduction paragraphs and how to create a good intro to an essay.
  • TKM Reading Guide #3 due

    Reading guide #3 for chapters 11-15 due today. We will go over the answers in class.
  • Grammar Workshop

    We will do a grammar workshop about the top 20 most common grammar mistakes people make.
  • Group Discussion

    Students will get into groups and discuss a set of high thinking questions about the reading they have done about TKM so far.
  • Free Write

    Students will do a free write about what they have learned so far through TKM, what they understand better now, and how much they are getting out of the book.
  • Four Corners Game

    Students will play the four corners game by going into different corners based on interests and questions asked around the room. This can pertain to literature or can be fun interests, for example, baseball.
  • Vocabulary Lesson 2

    We will go over words as a classroom and determine their meaning and the way they work within sentences. Students will get worksheets to do at home for practice.
  • Reading Guide #4

    We will go over and discuss the questions from the reading guide for chapters 16-20
  • Writing Workshop

    Workshop on concrete details and commentary with examples. Have students practice with this and try it on their own.
  • Free Write

    Students will do a free write about social justice and freedom
  • Reading Game

    Students will get portions of text and poems and we will analyze them in groups to see what students come up with. Then we will go over them together and discuss textual analysis.
  • Reading Guide #5

    We will go over and discuss the questions from the reading guide for chapters 21-25.
  • Vocab Quiz

    Students will take a small quiz about the words we have been practicing with. They will also turn in their worksheets.
  • Grammar Workshop

    Students will be getting worksheets to do in groups about how to use better and more productive language when speaking and writing. Ex. They will fill in synonyms for words like "says," "great," and other overused words.
  • Writing Workshop

    Writing Workshop lead by me on conclusions and how to effectively wrap up thoughts. We will also go over topic sentences and ending sentences. Students will practice with groups and we will share out answers to the whole class.
  • TKM Essay Prompts

    Hand out essay prompts for the TKM formal essay. We will go over these prompts in class and go over good sample essays for students to begin getting ideas.
  • Reading Guide #6

    We will go over and discuss the questions from the reading guide for chapters 26-31.
  • Vocabulary Lesson

    We will get a new list of words and as a class we will go over them and learn their meanings and how they work in sentences. Students will get worksheets to take home for practice.
  • Finish up TKM and Quick Write

    We will have a full class discussion about the ending of TKM and how everyone felt. There will be a quick write about individual feelings about the end and about the story as a whole.
  • TKM Essay Work + Discussion Questions

    Students will show me what prompt they have chosen and they will break into groups based off of prompt. Students will then discuss the questions provided for them in order to get a deeper understanding of their topic and other opinions.
  • Vocab Quiz

    Students will take a small quiz on the words they learned the past week. They will also turn in their worksheets.
  • Grammar Workshop

    We will go over prepositions, what they are, how they work in sentences, and how to properly use them in writing.
  • Begin looking at "Night" by Elie Wiesel

    We will do a pre-reading activity with "Night" and learn about the author and his past.
  • Revision Workshop Day

    Students will bring in a full draft of their essay. We will do peer review in class today, so students will switch their papers with two others and make comments on others papers.
  • TKM Essay due

    TKM essay due in class today
  • Begin reading "Night" in class

    We will popcorn read "Night" the first chapter. Then we will do a class discussion on markers we see within the text so far.
    Students required to read section 1 of the book by Monday the 31st.
  • Vocabulary Lesson

    We will get a new set of words and go over their meanings, and how they work in sentences. Students will receive worksheets to take home for practice.
  • Reading Activity

    We will do an activity about themes and symbols.
  • Writing Activity + Quick Write

    We will do an activity about metaphors, similes, and literary devices. Students will make their own metaphors and we will share to the class.
    Next we will do a quick write about the TKM essay, how did people feel it went. What could you do better/ improve? What help do you need to improve?
  • Halloween Writing activity

    We will do Halloween mad-libs together as a class. Then we will read a few short scary stories together.
  • Reading Guide 1 "Night"

    We will go over as a class the first section of Night and go over the reading guide. Plus class discussion about themes within and how we are feeling reading this.
  • Vocabulary Quiz

    Students will do a small quiz in class on the words we have been practicing, plus turn in worksheets.
  • Grammar Workshop

    I will lead a lecture about nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives and the differences. We will do class workshops on the board about defining the different devices.
  • Reading Guide 2

    We will go over the reading guide students did for section 2.
  • Vocabulary Lesson

    We will get a new set of words and go over the meanings and how they work in sentences.
  • Writing Workshop

    Have each student write a brief descriptive paragraph, then pass it to the person on their left. Have that person translate the paragraph into boring, nondescriptive language, and fold the sheet down to cover the original paragraph. Pass to left; have the person fill in the descriptions. Wash, rinse, repeat, etc until it’s gone around the entire circle and is back to the original author. Have them read the first paragraph and the last one, and see how things have changed.
  • Go over TKM essays

    I will pass back essays and we as a class will go over the most common mistakes that I saw and how to fix them.
  • Vocab Quiz

    Students will take a small quiz on the word list we had. They will also turn in their worksheets to me.
  • Reading Guide 3

    We will go over the reading guide for section 3 of "Night." We will go through the text and find favorite moments, quotes, etc.
  • Watch videos on culture

    We will watch videos in class about discrimination of culture, and ethnicity.
  • Grammar Workshop

    Small workshop on punctuation, and proper usage of commas, semi colons, colons, etc.
  • Watch videos on religion + Free Write

    We will watch videos about discrimination of religion.
    Students will write a free write about how they felt when watching the videos from yesterday and today. How did the discrimination make them feel? How does this connect to "Night?"
  • Socratic Seminar Part 1

    The first half of students will be in the middle discussing ethnicity, the outer circle will take notes and ask questions at the end.
  • Socratic Seminar Part 2

    The second half of students will be in the middle discussing religion, and the outer circle will be taking notes and can ask questions at the end.
  • Day off for Thankgiving

    No School
  • Reading Guide 4 & 5

    We will go over the reading guides for section 4 and 5. We will do a class discussion on the ending, and how people felt about the resolution/ending.
  • Vocabulary Lesson

    We will get a new list of words and go over them as a class. We will learn their definitions and how to use them in sentences.
  • Grammar Lesson

    We will do a grammar workshop on tense and how to keep tense correct when writing.
  • Prompts for "Night" Essay

    Students will get the "Night" essay prompts and we will go over each one together. We will brainstorm ideas about each of the topics, and students will get the remainder of the time to ask questions or work on essay.
  • Reading Activity

    We will do a character activity about WWII and people will create a character from this time frame. They will then write a story about this character and give them a background. We will share out stories as a class at the end.
  • Vocab Quiz

    Students will take a quiz on the words we have been practicing and turn in their worksheets.
  • Class Discussion

    We will go over many different stereotypes both negative and positive. We will discuss stereotypes, the negativity of them, and how to work on banishing them
  • Grammar/ writing Workshop

    We will do a lesson on how to proofread writing for mechanical errors, tense issues, etc. We will go over tips/tricks to editing work.
  • Stereotypes Activity

    Students will get in groups and pick a stereotype to focus on, or a few from the same topic. They will research the stereotype, why it is relevant, and why it is still being used. Students will begin their posters if they have time.
  • Poster Gallery Walk

    Students will finish their posters in class and then we will do a gallery walk to look at everyones work across the room.
  • Vocabulary Lesson

    We will learn new words and go over their meanings and how they work in sentences.
  • Peer Review Day

    Students will bring in a draft of their "Night" essays and we will do a peer review day. Students will swap papers will another student and peer review each others paper.
  • Review Day

    We will have a review day about both of the books we read this semester, TKM and Night. I will take questions from students
  • Jeopardy Day

    We will play jeopardy in class for students to review for the final.
  • Final Vocab Quiz

    Students will take their final vocab quiz of the words we did last week, plus turn in their worksheets.
  • Final

    Students will take their final, it will be about TKM and Night, and there will be a few questions about grammar that we have worked with all semester.
