I was a student who loved school and looked forward to every day in the classroom. I worked hard to please my teachers and acheive my best. This was the foundation of my knowledge and understanding of curriculum as a learner.
-
Playing school in our family home was the most popular way to pass time. We had two old fashioned, lift top desks and small blackboards which served as my classroom and my sister served as my student for many years.
-
Summer camp was a significant part of my development and understanding of learning. It was a place where I pushed my limits and stretched myself as a person. Summer camp is also the place where i learned that learning does not just happen in the classroom.
-
I have always been keen to teach others and this was evident when I took on a few piano students who were my peers. I was only in grade 7 but I loved organizing material, teaching concepts, giving feedback, etc. This experience was one of my first as a more formal teacher.
-
Grade 7 & 8 were very significant for my path as a teacher, because this is when I met teachers who truly impacted my life. These teachers went above and beyond to make me a part of their world and treated me like more than a student in their class. I believe I often try to model their teaching style in my classroom today.

After months of waiting, completed the St. John's Ambulance Babysitting Course. This was what I did with my free time for maty years. I loved creating activities for the kids and I to do together.
-
My first highschool was not as positive as the completion of highschool. At KCI I felt isolated and as though I did not fit in. I believe this was an important part of my curriculum memories because it taught me the value of happiness at school. As I was unhappy at school, I did not learn the way I should have.
-
My favourite school of all taught me the joy of being a student and of learning. This was where I understood that I was in control of my learning. This empowerment was such an important part of curriculum making for me because I truly understood the value of hard work and learning strategies.
-
As a member of crew ministries I spent the summer travelling the country running camps for large numbers of children. This was an opportunity for me to practice teaching and incorporating fun into this instruction. Teaching at camps has been a very important part of my development and one that has made me the teacher I am today.
-
This is my favourite camp and another place where I was able to stretch my 'teaching wings' and learn to incorporate learning with FUN. I believe having been a camp counsellor has made me a much more effective and creative teacher.
-
Instructing swimming lessons was how I made money for many years. Having taught at different pools in different environments through out my swim coach experience really taught me about the physical aspects of teaching.
-
As a member of Extend-A-Family and St. Andrews Church I worked with kids with special needs as a one-on-one camp counsellor coordinator. This was a summer of significant learning about the restrictions of some kids learning abilities and how to modify lessons and activities when necessary.
-
This was my first experience as a 'teacher' and it was also when I realized the value of good lessons. I remember taking over for a lady who had taught the course for years and she used the same handouts and ideas for too long. I remember spending hours creating interesting and fun ideas that could help the kids to learn the information required in a fun way. This was a significant part of my learning as a teacher because I think enjoyment must be considered in curriculum making.

This swimming experience was very unique as it involved one-on-one teaching in home pools. This experience was very much like homeschooling the students in swimming.

Beechwood pool lifeguard and swimming instructor. This job was unique because we put on many extra events which taught me a lot about the value of the social aspect of learning and community.
-
From 2000-2005 I was busy being a student. I think this is important for my curriculum making because it was a time when I was really engaged with learning and loving what university life had to offer me.
-
Teaching swimming lessons in Dubai taught me a lot about the importance of cultural sensitivity and understanding different needs. I did not always understand why my students did what they did or believed what they did, but I learned to respect their differences.
-
Teachers College at Murdoch University in Perth. This was a significant stepping stone in my career as it was the first time I really accepted my fate of becoming a teacher and took the required schooling to become a teacher.
-
Dubai International Academy was my first school. It was a PYP school and this style of teaching is something I still use in my class today. It focused on inquiry based learning and the knowledge and experience I received at this school was some of the most significant I received to date.
-
Raffles International School was the second school I worked at. This learning experience was unique as the school had a very strong cultural feel which was to be respected at all times.
-
The role of curriculum coordinator was given to me at the beginning of the year and this position taught me a lot about the different curriculums available throughout the academia and the value and qualtiy of those curriculums.
-
Upon moving to Alberta I started teaching at Rundle College Elementary School as a supply teacher. I was happy for this experience so I can understand the difference of being a teacher who just steps in and out of the lives of children compared to the teachers who really connect their lives with their students which I believe is such an important part of curriculum making.
-
A full time position came up at Rundle College Elementary school and it was offered to me. I have currently been working at the school for 3.5 years.

What does curriculum mean to me? This writing allowed me to explore my past as a teacher to determine what I believe curriculum to look like in my life and in my classroom.
-
This writing focused on one student in particular who I have seen considerable change in from the beginning of the year. This student has inspired me as a teacher and has truly paved a new path for herself as a math student.
-
I was asked to present at AISI with a project my grade team deveoped last year. This was the first time I officially taught teachers about ideas for the classroom.
-
This writing had me decide what object in my classroom is the most significant to me as a curriculum maker. I chose the photos of my students which I keep on the wall by my desk.
