    PEEL PARAGRAPH Caroline Chisholm arrived in Sydney in 1838. She was shocked at the poor conditions of the ships and decided to do something about them. In 1841 she founded the Female Emigrant’s Home in Sydney which gave shelter to women and also helped unemployed women look for jobs. She also founded the Family Colonisation Loan Society, to help out families new to Australia and in need.

Both sides have a different take on faith, causing a riot over who’s idea is right.

    St Patrick’s Church Built

    In 1848, the Augustinian friar James Goold was appointed the first bishop of Melbourne and became the fourth bishop in Australia, after Sydney, Hobart and Adelaide. Negotiations with the colonial government for the grant of five acres of land for a church in the Eastern Hill area began in 1848. On 1 April 1851, only 16 years after the foundation of Melbourne, the Colonial Secretary of Victoria finally granted the site to the Roman Catholic Church.
