    Planning (Mitchell & Arslaan)

Our planning started in late December where we initially discussed as a group what ideas we had and we agree to making a film opening that belonged to the ‘thriller’ genre as we were are fans of movies from that genre, so we knew it well. Our ideas for the narrative began on a mind map; it revolves around a kidnapped man in an abandoned warehouse. After mind-mapping our ideas, we decided to organise and illustrate everything in to two story boards.

    Planning Continued (Mitchell & Arslaan)

…We photocopied these storyboards and made further annotations. During the Christmas holidays we discussed the finer details. When we came back we made shot lists, cast our actors and decided on final locations for our sets. We made a list of all the props we needed and listed where we would source them from. Finally, we made a draft of the script for the movie opening. After feedback from teachers, we edited the draft and created a final edition of the script.

    Research (Mitchell & Arslaan)

During the planning stage, we started to research films from the thriller genre to get an idea of conventions from the genre and perhaps use and develop these conventions in our work, which of course was the case in some areas. Mitchell researched: Silence of the Lambs, Serpico and Vertigo and Arslaan researched: The Butterfly Effect, Gone Girl and Fight Club.

    Filming (Mitchell & Arslaan)

Filming began on the 25th of January after planning and research was complete. That day was when we filmed in the warehouse and completed a majority of the filming, including the B-roll and the parts with dialogue. After this we went to Elliott’s house to film the bath tub scene. On the 23rd of March, we filmed the flashbacks on school premises.

    Filming Continued (Mitchell & Arslaan)

On the 29th we filmed the establishing shot at the embankment because the building we filmed in originally had construction works surrounding it, ruining the potential for an establishing shot. On the 13th April we filmed some extra B-roll to lengthen the video and create an intenser atmosphere.

    Editing (Mitchell)

The editing process began on the 26th January after we filmed the initial and main footage of the video. We edited using Adobe Premiere Pro. We decided to split the workload into two. Mitchell compiled the videos and audio, trimming where necessary. He also colour corrected and played around with the exposure levels to find the right lighting.

    Editing (Arslaan)

After all the other footage was recorded, Arslaan created the flashback effect for the three flashbacks scenes and added the muzzle flash and other special effects to give the video a nice finish.

    Evaluation (Mitchell & Arslaan)

The evaluation began after all editing finished. We compared our own media product to the ones we researched. We had to include our screenshots from the preliminary and our final media product.
