  • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears

    The US Government and the Native Americans were the 2 groups involved in the Trail of Tears. The cause for this event was President Andrew Jackson invoking the Indian Removal Act of 1830. This act forced the Native Americans to migrate to Oklahoma, creating more room for Americans east of the Mississippi River. The effects of the Trail of Tears were devastating. Migrates were starving, exhausted, and faced disease. Thousands of migrants died on this journey due to what they had to endure.

    1st Opium War

    The 1st Opium War was a war fought between the Chinese and the British and lasted from 1839-1842. The cause of this war was an imbalance of trade. China tried to make opium illegal and that did not sit well with Britain due to the fact that opium played a huge role in their economy. The effect of this was was the creation of the Treaty of Nanking. This required China to open ports to foreigners, pay damages, give the island of Hong Kong to Britain, and required free trade.

    Berlin Conference

    Otto Von Bismarck held a meeting for European leaders from 1844-1845. The reason for this meeting was to decide on how to colonize Africa, what would be the boundaries, and how to move goods on the major rivers. The result of this meeting was that it created a set list of rules so that the Europeans could prosper from Africa while staying in their lane. However, this conference made Africa politically in-stable and used their land to the Europeans advantage.

    The Great Potato Famine greatly affected Ireland from the years 1845-1849. The cause of this famine was a disease that affected the potato crop which greatly affected the Irish due to their dependency on the crop. The effects of the famine caused 3 million to emigrate. This push factor greatly affected these people and many migrated to find a better life.

    Taiping Rebellion

    The Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) involved starving peasants, workers, miners, and the Qing Dynasty. The cause of this rebellion was for all of the starving people to overthrow the Qing Dynasty. Due to flooding, famine, and a breakout of the plague, the people wanted a change of control. This then led to the death approximately 20 million.

    2nd Opium War

    The 2nd Opium War lasted from 1856 to 1860 and was fought between China and Britain. The reason for this war was the fact that both Britain and China weren't happy with the Treaty. China then boarded a British ship setting off the war again. The war ended in the Treaty of Tientsin which allowed for foreign envoys to stay in Beijing, new post to Western trade, and legalized opium.

    Boer War

    The 1st Boer War lasted from 1880-1881. This was a brutal war fought between the British and the Dutch that sadly took many lives. The British will take control of the Cape Colony from the Dutch. This is the start of it all. Then, the Dutch and British fight over the land that the British had just claimed. The effect of this was is that the British will be victorious and keep their land after the battles are fought.

    Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882

    The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was excluding the Chinese by force of the U.S. Government. This act banned Chinese immigration due to the huge numbers coming to California for jobs. Due to this act, other places followed suite like, Australia. Another effect was that many immigrants were attacked or lost their lives in response to the prejudice of the time period.

    2nd Boer War

    The second Boer War lasted from 1899-1902 and was also fought by the Dutch and British. The cause of the second war was similar to the first in that it was a fight for land. However, this time it ended in the signing of the Treaty of Peace of Vereeniging. The treaty forced the Dutch to peace and to swear their allegiance to the crown. Therefore, the British Empire continued to grow and take over the world.
  • The Boxer Rebellion

    The Boxer Rebellion

    This rebellion was fought between Chinese Christians, Chinese Boxers, and Empress Dowager Cixi from the years 1899-1901. Chinese boxers attacked Chinese Christians due to the encouragement of the Empress. The Empress would later add that all foreigners should be killed. The effect of this rebellion was that the Boxer's brought in more Western trade and influence.
