ended in the 13th century. The actual name of the Empire was Wagadugu, Ghana was the title of the kings who ruled the kingdom. It is the earliest known empire.

Mali

ended in 1600. The empire was founded by Sundiata Keita and became notorious for the wealth of its ruler. Located in west Africa along the niger river. At its peak it consisted of roughly 40 to 50 million people

Kilwa

ended in 15th century. Once the most popular trading post in east africa. trade was mainly in gold and iron from Zimbabwe, ivory and slaves from Tanzania, and textiles, jewelry, porcelain, and species from asia.

Hausa

ended in 1800. Located in northwestern Niger to northern Nigeria.Since the beginning of Hausa history, the seven states of Hausaland divided up production and labor activities depending on each location and their natural resources.

Great Zimbabwe

ended in 1400. Located in present day Zimbabwe. Their most enduring and impressive remains are its stone walls. they were made from granite blocks from the exposed rock of the surrounding hills. it provided a convenient and readily available building resource.

Songhai

ended in 1591. Kingdom came from a very fertile area great for farming. Located on both banks of the Niger river.Considered largest empire ever to be created in tropical Africa.

yoruba (oyo)

ended in 1905. This empire dominated all Yoruba kingdoms: Ife, Ijesha, Egba, Ijebu, Sabe and Owu. the Oyo palace is estimated to be sitting on about 640 acres. We still have excavations of the old Oyo empire, and centuries after, some of the walls of the Capital of old Oyo empire, are still standing in its original form.

Benin

ended in 1897. Located on the coastal region of East Africa. Benin's royal histories relate that the court's brass casters learned their art from an Ife master named Iguegha, who had been sent from Ife around 1400 at the request of Benin's oba Oguola. They have placed Ijebu under its dominion.

Matupa

ended in 1629. It stretched between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers of Southern Africa in the modern states of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The dynasty’s foundation to Mbire, a semi mythical ruler of the 14th century, his great-great-grandson Nyatsimba, who ruled in the late 15th century, was the actual creator of the empire.
