  • Story

A time when a family member had to go to the ER is when my step dad dropped a 500 lb sheet of metal on his finger. He was getting sheets of metal down and then one slipped and he fell and then it crushed his finger. They drove to a hospital because there was one close. He was in the hospital for a couple of days but he got out and the tip of his finger had been removed to help not get infection.

You should know when you need to go to the emergency room v.s. urgent care. The ER is if you have symptoms that may be life threatening. "The emergency department was designed to provide fast, life or limb saving care. Many people, however, use the ER as a place to receive urgent care without realizing it." (Page 6).

Urgent care is for conditions that can be treated that aren't emergencies. "Urgent care departments are same day clinics that can handle a variety of conditions that need to be treated right away but are not emergencies." (Page 8). You should also know when to call 911. “'Many people are confused about when to call 911,' says Dr. Evans. 'It’s better to be safe than sorry. If you are in doubt, please call 911'" (page 7).
