Megan's Tech Timeline

    Oakdale - Kindergarten
I began my career at Unit 5 at Oakdale Elementary. In my kindergarten classroom, I had two desktop computers, a Smartboard with a projector, and a document camera that was bought with Title 1 funds. In September or October, both my Smartboard AND my projector stopped working. Since Oakdale is a low-income school, it wasn't a high priority to get them replaced. In fact it took MONTHS for them to fix it. In the workroom, we had a black and white copier, and in the IMC we had a color laser printer.

    Northpoint - Kindergarten
I moved to Northpoint because my class was a bubble at Oakdale. I had the same standard 2 desktops, Smartboard, and projector, but I didn't have a doc cam, so I bought my own off of Amazon. I also received an iPad as a K teacher so I could easily input the KIDS assessment data. Since NP was higher-income, we had more tech resources. In addition to a B&W copier and color printer, we also had a color copier and a Riso Machine (pron. Rizzo) to copy on construction paper.

    Northpoint - 2nd Grade

Moving to 2nd grade at NP, I had to give up my iPad, but I ended up buying my own with Scholastic points. In the 2nd grade commons, we also had access to a tablet cart that we shared among 4 classes. With higher level students, I was able to use these a lot more, but being Android tablets that weren't necessarily supported by the district, we had limited apps and limited access to multiples that worked at one time. We were able to experiment with the Google suite and apps like Google Goggles.

    Hudson - 1st Grade
I moved to Hudson because the bubble that moved me from NP-K to NP-2 hit me again. I had the standard tech in my room here, but Hudson's PTO purchased 5 iPads for each K-2 classroom, so we had that extra. We also had a laptop cart, but getting ones that worked was a hit-and-miss game, so I didn't use them. I was introduced to the GoNoodle website, but with such big desks, it was hard for students to move around. This classroom also came with a doc came, but it was broken, so I just used mine.

Not much changed in my 2nd year at Hudson. I did switch out big desks for small ones, so that was a help to free up more space for our GoNoodling. The laptops were still hit-and-miss, so I again didn't use them. I did start trying out new apps on the iPads, but nothing truly groundbreaking.

A few things changed this past year. We all got an additional iPad for our K-2 classrooms. We now have 6 for student use. I still use my personal one. We also received a new laptop cart with "new" laptops that actually work and hold a charge. I started using more apps on our iPads and I began using the laptops. We use both iPads and laptops 2-3 times per day. I also started experimenting on my own with the green screen. I would like for my kids to start using it this spring, too.
  • 1st Grade - Hudson - Post TCH430

During TCH430, I was able to implement a (re)Design project that allowed my highest achievers to challenge themselves with a research tech project. With a little help from me and support from their peers, students were able to create PowerPoint presentations on topics of their choice and then print them out to turn them into books. During reading centers, I was able to add two technology stations. Students and parents also got involved with posting, viewing, and responding on SeeSaw.
